 Law Enforcement Training

Kern County Law Enforcement Training Academy

Pride, Integrity and Honor

The Academy's Creed

MISSION

The Kern County Law Enforcement Training Academy is dedicated to the training and development of men and women to effectively and successfully enter the law enforcement profession as peace officers. The Academy is committed to training peace officers in the philosophy of Community Oriented Policing, with emphasis on professional values, principles, ethics, positive intervention, communication, and problem solving skills. Academy staff is dedicated to providing the critical knowledge, skills, and abilities that will ensure these men and women will be thoroughly prepared to effectively, skillfully, and compassionately carry out the duties of a peace officer in the communities they will serve.

The academy program is certified by the California Peace Officer Standards in Training (POST) and is a fully accredited community college course presented by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office and the Kern County Community College District.

The Academy program is not a typical college course. It operates in a semi-military style format like most law enforcement agencies. Attendees will be expected to be familiar with and conform to all rules, regulations, and procedures of the Academy. The Academy has strict attendance requirements; an academic standard in which participants must achieve specified minimum scores; and a very demanding physical conditioning component in which participants must also achieve established minimum scores in order to pass the course.

Delivery Formats

The Academy is delivered in two formats:

1. The intensive format is a 21-23 week program, 40 hours per week.

2. The extended format, which is held on two weeknights and Saturdays, is offered in the POST Modular Format (Levels 3, 2, and 1) and takes approximately 18 months to complete.  This format also satisfies the requirements for Reserve Peace Officer training.

 Academy Evaluation and Selection

The Kern County Law Enforcement Academy is an impacted program (there are more students applying for the course than there are seats available). Prior to enrollment into the academy, candidates must successfully complete a screening and evaluation process. This process will include a physical agility entrance exam, the POST Reading and Writing Skills Examination, a hand-printed essay, and an oral interview. Students will be placed on an eligibility list according to the score they receive during this evaluation process.

Non-sworn students who place high enough in this selection process and are offered a seat in the academy will be required to pass a limited background check, DOJ fingerprint clearance and physical exam by their physician.

Costs

The cost of attending the academy is approximately $2000.00. Students who are eligible are encouraged to apply for financial aid from the Kern Community College district.
